The Dragon of Whorl Hill

 The Wyrm of Whorl Hill

Whorl Hill is a wooded, dome shaped hill between Faceby and Whorlton in North Yorkshire.North Yorkshire has many tales of wyrms or dragons as does most of the north east of England . Handale, Nunnington, Sockburn, Lambton, Slingsby, Wantley, Loschby all claim to have had dragons or worms.

For more on the Lambton Worm read here :

 https://cryptozoo-oscity.blogspot.com/2009/10/was-lambton-worm-lake-cryptid.html

The story of the Sexhow or Whorl Hill dragon appeared in a book in 1888.

. Thomas Parkinson wrote in “Yorkshire legends and traditions” of 1888.

“Sexhow is a small hamlet or township in the parish of Rudby, some four miles from the town of Stokesley, in Cleveland. Upon a round knoll at this place a most pestilent dragon, or worm, took up its abode; whence it came, or what was its origin, no one knew. So voracious was its appetite , that it took the milk of nine cows daily to satisfy its cravings; but we have not heard that it required any other kind of food. When not sufficiently fed , the hissing noise it made alarmed all the country roundabout; and, worse than that, its breath was so strong as to be absolutely poisonous, and those who breathed it died. This state of things was unbearable, and the country was becoming rapidly depopulated. At length the monster’s day of doom dawned. A knight, clad in complete armour, passed that way, whose name or country no one knew, and, after a hard fight, he slew the monster, and left it dead upon the hill, and then passed on his way. He came, he fought, he won; and then he went away. The inhabitants of the hamlet of Sexhow took the skin of the monster-worm and suspended it in the church, over the pew belonging to the hamlet of Sexhow, where it long remained a trophy of the knight’s victory, and of their own deliverance from the terrible monster.”

(The skin was said to be hung in the church at Hutton Rudby and later destroyed in  the reformation.)

With so many similar stories and legends one has to wonder if there is some truth in it. Could some creature ,perhaps a huge snake or lizard lived in those times ?

Claimed Extinction of Ancient Sharks Never Happened?

Claimed Extinction of Ancient Sharks Never Happened, Says Study

BY WILLIAM MCGEE, ZENGER NEWS ON 12/18/21 AT 9:00 AM ES

Amassive shark die-off 19 million years ago that was reported in the prestigious journal Science and made headlines the world over did not actually happen, according to new research. In June, two U.S. scientists reported a decline in shark diversity with a decrease of more than 90 percent in the abundance of deep-ocean sharks all those years ago.

However, researchers at the Natural History Museum Vienna and others have now cast doubt on the event, saying it probably did not happen. The Austrian researchers say that due to the relative stability of the deep sea, such an enormous decline in deep-ocean sharks would be surprising. In several projects financed by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF), we examined marine deposits of the same age in Italy, Greece, Turkey, Tanzania, India, Sri Lanka and Oman. Nowhere was there any evidence of an extinction event 19 million years ago," Mathias Harzhauser, who heads the museum's Geology and Paleontology Department, said in a statement.

Could it be Megladon  or other large sharks are still around? Food for thought.

Giant Sea Worm

Divers discovered a horrifying 26-foot sea worm that only comes out at night

Divers off the coast of New Zealand came face to face with a giant sea worm that was almost 30-foot long. The creature is called a pyrosome, and while it might look intimidating, it’s actually perfectly safe to approach. Pyrosomes are part of a family of sea creatures known as tunicates or “sea squirts”. They’ve also been called cockroaches of the sea, National Geographic notes, due to their ability to pull food from even the most inhospitable environments.

Legendary Horned Water Serpents

 Horned Water Creatures

Some sightings of lake creatures such as Ogopogo  or Nessie describe them as having horns or protuberances on their heads. Many countries have legends about horned freshwater serpents .It is a common belief among many native indigenous people  of the  United States and Canada. Horned serpent stories vary  but they are usually describe a large dragon-like creature with horns . Sometimes seen on  land, they tend to live in rivers and lakes. They are often depicted in the art works of tribal people.

In Greek  mythology the Cerastes is a creature like a  snake with either two large horns or four pairs of smaller horns. Isidore of Seville described it.

In Mesopotamian the legendary  Ningishzida, is described  as a serpent with horns.

Cheyenne people believe that there are two names for the water monsters, some believe in two different types. Mehne is always described as a horned serpent, while Axxea is sometimes described as a worm.  They may be placated  by making offerings.

The indigenous people that lived near Lake Champlain were the Abenaki and the Iroquois. Both  had legends concerning a serpent in the lake. The Abanaki called the creature Tatoskok. They made offerings to the creature.

There have been about 300 reported sightings of Champ over the years. Read more here:

https://cryptozoo-oscity.blogspot.com/2011/11/champthe-lake-champlain-creature.html

I feel legends should not be ignored and often contain some truth. Whether it is because the creatures were seen or because of finds of prehistoric creatures’ fossils, no one knows. The fact that there are still sightings today would tend to confirm the former, that there were sightings. What do you think?

Australian Dogman or Yowie?

Man claims he was stalked by terrifying ‘dog man’ monster in Australian outback

A man has bizarrely claimed he was stalked by a terrifying “dog man” monster in the Australian outback – and even says he has picture “proof”.

The fisherman, called John, wildly claims he was left “petrified for a month” after encountering the supposed “half-dog, half-human creature” on two separate occasions.

Speaking on the Believe: Paranormal & UFO Podcast, the Aussie insisted he was “followed” by what he has branded a “dog man” – and claims he “thought he was going to be killed”.

John was fishing from his kayak on Boxing Day last year when he says the first incident happened.“I noticed that every time I took a stroke with the paddle of my kayak, whatever this thing was, it was taking a stride to each paddle I was taking,” he said.I stopped for a bit and the sound stopped in the bush too, and I thought it was a bit odd.“So I took off paddling again, and sure enough as soon as I started to paddle every stroke, this thing would take a step.So whatever it was, this thing was following me, it wasn’t a coincidence or anything. It was more of a stalk.”

Freaked out, John took a snap and claims he captured the “dog man” on camera.

There is not a great deal of history of dogmen or wolf men but there is the Yowie or monster men of Australia.

“Within a period of five months beginning in late 1977 five separate yowie incidents were reported in or near Lamington National park in southeast Queensland.”

Yaquina Bay Monster?

Yaquina Bay Nessie

Yaquina Bay is a coastal community  in Newport, Oregon, The bay is a semi-enclosed body of water  with connection to the Pacific Ocean, but also diluted with freshwater from the Yaquina River. The Bay is traversed by the Yaquina Bay Bridge.

The  Yaquina Bay News reported in 1935 that two sea creatures, matching the description of a Kronosaurus (extinct aquatic creature), had been sighted off the coast, attacking local sea lions. It was dated June 13th and stated ‘seen by a couple ,no names given’.

Nicknamed Nessie, the Yaquina Bay Monster. A statue has been erected in the town of  a Kronosaurus, a plesiosaur that has been extinct for millions of years to represent the monster.

No further sightings seem to have been reported so was it a hoax? Anyone with further information please post.

Pollution Squid ?

The Oil Pit Squid

Can creatures survive in Industrial waste? The strange story of the oil pit squid suggests they might.

The story goes that workers cleaning out a sludge pit at GMC Delphi Interior and Lighting plant (Plant 9) in Anderson Indiana in 1996, found  greyish-red, tentacled creatures about an inch (2.5 cms) in diameter and 6-8 inches (15-20cms) long living in a mixture  of oil, antifreeze, and chemicals left from manufacturing car parts. They had one eye with  an eyelid. One was said to have been killed and placed in a jar to be sent for examination but the jar disappeared leaving no evidence.

Sharon Morton, spokeswoman for the GMC Delphi Interior and Lighting Plant Number 9 said in a statement that what workers found in the pit was a bacterial growth that formed when organic matter was placed in freshwater. The cause of this, according to Morton, was a broken sprinkler line nearby that allowed freshwater to seep into the emulsion pit. No more were found.

Is it possible that the jar disappeared to hide the evidence or was it a hoax? There have been fish that have adapted to living in polluted waters so it could be possible .What do you think.

The Kraken found?

Identity Of Mystery Giant Squid That Gatecrashed Shipwreck Search Revealed

Fishing around in the ocean can turn up some unexpected things, including shipwrecks, ginormous beasts, and mysterious species. An expedition by OceanX back in 2020 managed to have all three, as an unidentified giant swooshed past while they were inspecting a surprise find: the Pella, a ferry that sank after catching fire in 2011.

The remarkable scene was stumbled across by a remote operating vehicle (ROV) owned by the marine research organization. The year was 2020, and the OceanXplorer research ship had set out to map the seafloor of the northern Red Sea. Using onboard technologies, they were able to establish the lay of the land but came across a 100-meter (328-foot) long lump on the seafloor. While the Pella’s remains were easy enough to identify, pinning down the many-legged mystery that paid them a visit proved more difficult to solve. Fortunately, the mysterious squid appeared to make an appearance in every single one of the ROV’s three visits to the wreck, though it’s possible the cameos were the work of more than one animal.Armed with their footage, the team behind the discovery sought to settle the debate in seeking the expertise of invertebrate zoologist Michael Vecchione of the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History, Washington. To their delight, he had an answer.

"We got photobombed by the giant purpleback," Mattie Rodrigue, science program lead at OceanX, told Live Science. You’ve been rumbled, Sthenoteuthis oualaniensis.

Monster Turtle in West Virginia ?

Freshwater Monster

A 20 feet ( over 6 metres) monster has been reported along the Monongahela River in Marion County the Ohio  and Allegheny (West Virginia and Pennsylvania). It has had several names including the Rivesville Monster or the Hoult Monster, but it is usually called Ogua. Some describe it as a huge snapping turtle ,some more alligator like. Some say it has two heads and comes on land and can eat a whole deer. In prehistoric times giant turtles did live in the area.

It was first mentioned  in 1745 in Hoult when a 12 Year old boy was pulled under water by the creature while fishing with his family. The boy was never found. There have been more sightings since then .

Two West Virginia men claimed to have seen the monster in 2019. The two fishermen at first thought  a homeless person had fallen in the river until they saw a snake-like tail.Nate Moreno and Jake Byers believe they saw the Ogua River Monster while fishing for catfish. The two men spotted the Ogua Monster in the moonlight, initially thinking it might have been a homeless person who fell in the river. They watched Ogua between 5 and 10 minutes. One of the guys claimed to have seen the monster just a few days prior. It looked something like “someone swimming on their hands and knees, crawling across the rocks” except it had a snake-like tail. Read  their story here:

A prehistoric survivor or an anomaly? Hopefully more sightings will show what is lurking among the cat fish.

Strange Sea Creature Spotted

Mystery beast with no eyes, ears or mouth stuns diver in depths of the Red Sea

Lukas Ostertag, from Heidelberg, Germany, was one of those who encountered the freaky sea beast, which he described as being a “long square rubber pipe-like thing”, while diving.

Lukas Ostertag was one of the underwater group who encountered the freaky sea beast while diving in the Sataya Reef, off the Egyptian coast.

The 23-year-old described the creature’s appearance as being a “long square rubber pipe-like thing” with a pointy end.

“It looked like nothing I've seen before,” he said. "It definitely was super strange as it seemed to move on its own and nobody knew what it was."

Lukas said it reminded him of the Yrr - a fictional deep-sea species hellbent on destroying mankind, dreamed up by Frank Sch tzing for his novel, The Swarm.

He and his fellow divers thought it might be a kind of polyp - a soft-bodied organism related to sea anemones and jellyfish.

Others guessed it to be a worm or a kind of plant, Lukas said, while one other person thought it might be a jellyfish.

New Zealand Bigfoot?

Moehau Bigfoot.

For  years there have been stories about a creature lurking in the Moehau mountain range on the Northern end of the Coromandel Peninsula of New Zealand . The Moehau as it is called after the area, is described as being a large  hairy bipedal creature. It has very long arms ending  in long fingers with sharp razor like nails.

In the 1870’s gold miners, looking for a place to stake a claim, reported sightings of  frightening creatures. Large human-like creatures were reported as attacking  prospectors. The local Maori indigenous people warned  prospectors not to go into the bush alone.

Nicola McCloy in her book: “New Zealand Mysteries” (Whitcoulls, 2005). Wrote that an Australian tourist  saw the creature as she bush walked in  1969. She described it as being like a gorilla.

In 1972 two pig hunters  said they saw a large creature some way from them. When they reached where they thought the creature had been standing all they  found were huge human-type footprints .

In 1983 a group  of the creatures  were seen by two men, in the vicinity of Lake Waikaremoana. The two men said there were  three juvenile females, a juvenile male, two  adult females and one adult male about six feet (2 metres)high. They were dressed in animal hides and  watched the men from behind foliage above a gully .The sighting lasted for about 5 or 6 minutes.

Some say that it   is an  exaggerated report of an escaped gorilla but it would have to be a family of them and they would have been around for over 100 years. So a New Zealand bigfoot? John Green said it was unlikely because New Zealand is so isolated and an island. In the ancient past it would have been attached to the mainland so the creatures could have been trapped there .Some say its a hoax but if so it has lasted for a very long time.

What Happened to the Pewaukee Lake Monster?

Pewaukee Lake Monster

Pewaukee Lake is in Waukesha County. It has a maximum depth of 45 feet and  has lots of Fish including  Musky, Panfish, Largemouth Bass, Northern Pike and Walleye.

In the 1890s, people reported seeing a huge green thing travelling through the lake at speed It spouted water from its head. A reward was offered for its capture. One witness claimed to have thrown a spear at the creature, but the weapon rebounded as if it had hit  rock or iron. People became too afraid to try and catch it.

The fact it spouted water made me think it was some kind of whale.Nothing has been heard of it since .What happened to it?

The North Saskatchewan River Monster

Pink Eyed River Monster.

The North Saskatchewan River runs through the Canadian Rockies and ends at Hudson Bay. It has a legendary monster called Pink Eye.

The first report dates back to  April  1939 .A Cree chief was crossing the river  on a horse drawn wagon when a large creature appeared in the water. He described it as having    horns  and huge eyes. The chief headed quickly to dry land as the creature got closer. It submerged when the chief reached the river bank.

In July  1942, some boys were swimming in the river The boys started throwing stones at the log . On being hit by a stone the log began to move .It turned around and swam towards them. The boys left the water and ran up the river bank. The creature tried to follow them .They described it as being large and grey with huge eyes and sharp teeth. It sank back into the water when it couldn’t reach them.

The monster nicknamed  Pink Eye was spotted again and chased two young men. One named Jimmy Richardson said how they ran from the water when a large creature appeared. It was described as having  grey skin, a large bony head, and huge pink eyes.

Some farmers claimed sheep had gone missing  and blamed the pink eyed monster.

In 1947, a visiting pilot from the Scottish Royal Air Force was out walking along the river. He poked a log he saw in the water. The log turned out to be pink eye but it did not attack.Instead it went further out into the river and was followed by a smaller creature like itself. The pilot said  the two creatures were grey skinned with large eyes that were reddish-pink.

Since then I could find no other reports. My first thought is that the creatures were albinos which would explain the pink eyes. I wondered if it was some sort of large freshwater seal or walrus. The smaller one could be female or offspring. As there have been no other sightings or photos it is difficult to make any identification or even to decide if it was a hoax or not.

Bigfoot Fight?

Pair of Bigfoot creatures spotted by hunters who were paralysed with fear

A bow-hunter in the US has shared his story of running for his life from a "huge" Bigfoot creature, before supposedly hearing a terrifying clash between two massive beasts at a nearby river

Two hunters discovered a pair of Bigfoot creatures fighting in the wild and claim they were paralysed with fear after the sighting.

Speaking to the Sasquatch Stories podcast, bow-hunter Mark said that he got close to not just one, but two of the elusive creatures when he was in the wilds of the US.

He was with a friend and together they spotted the massive creatures, which measured around 15ft tall. They said that at first, they thought they could have been bears, but soon realised they weren't, as the Daily Star reports.

As one of the creatures approached, the pair were terrified and were rooted to the spot, before they regained their nerves and ran away.

The Mammoth Returns?

Mammoth Returns

Colossal, a new Texas-based start-up, plans to bring the woolly mammoth back from the dead and return an ancient species to the Arctic tundra.

Working with Harvard University’s Dr. George Church, a pioneer who laid the scientific groundwork for the de-extinction of the mammoth, Colossal is a “new wave of thoughtful and disruptive conservation aimed at combating the effects of climate change through ecosystem restoration,” according to their press release. Using CRISPR gene-editing technology, Colossal’s goal is to “rewild” the Siberian Tundra with mammoths for the purpose of conservation and to restore the ecosystem back to when mammoths roamed.

Hobgoblins - Folklore or Fact?

Boggarts and Hobgoblins

Boggarts and Hobgoblins are found in UK folklore. There are places in the counties of Yorkshire and Lancashire called after Boggarts  such as  Boggart’s Hole in Lancashire or Boggle Hole in North Yorkshire . Boggarts were not invented for Harry Potter books and have been around for hundreds of years.

Hobgoblins look like small hairy men and interact with humans.  Households were thought to have their own hobgoblin that could help around the house, if treated well. The hobgoblin  would finish household chores at night whilst the family were asleep. If you upset or angered a Hobgoblin it would retaliate and would follow a family even if they moved house. It would turn  milk  sour, remove things from the house, cause animals to become lame and generally make a mess.An angry hobgoblin becomes  a boggart.

A Boggart could still look like a small hairy man or shape shift .Some  like  The  Boggart of Longar Hede  from Yorkshire were said to be  fearsome creatures the size of a calf, with long shaggy hair and eyes like saucers. The "Boggart of Hackensall Hall" in Lancashire had the appearance of a huge horse.

A story about a  boggart in Lancashire was published in 1861; the author wrote about  an elderly couple. They maintained that a boggart was buried at a nearby bend in the road under an ash tree, along with a cockerel with a stake driven through it. Despite being buried, the boggart was still able to create trouble. A farmer's wife, the old couple claimed, just two weeks earlier had heard doors banging in her farmhouse at night, then loud laughter; she looked out to see three candles casting blue light and a creature with red burning eyes leaping about. The following morning many marks of cloven hooves were seen outside the house. The couple claimed that the boggart had unhitched their horse and overturned their cart.

It is said you should never name a boggart or it will turn violent.

Another story from North  Yorkshire involved the family at Hart Hall Farm in Glaisdale and their hobgoblin. The family had been helped by this hobgoblin  for generations. One night, the master of the house caught sight of the hobgoblin.. He saw that the creature was completely naked, although very hirsute, so instead of the usual milk or cream left in payment for the work , the farmer  decided to pay that night with a smock. The hobgoblin was upset. He started shouting at the farmer  for the lack of payment and abandoned the farm. They never saw it again.

Are such little men real or just folklore? Bones that were claimed belonged to a race of small people have been found so it may be possible that small people that helped out did once exist.

Raptor Whale ?

New Discoveries and Lake Monsters

A team led by Egyptian scientists have dug up a 43 million-year-old fossil in the Sahara Desert in Egypt of a now-extinct amphibious four-legged whale.

The authors of the study say that this creature had "unique features of the skull" and that its "mandible suggest a capacity for more efficient oral mechanical processing. In other words, these walking whales had a "strong raptorial feeding style.""We discovered how fierce and deadly its powerful jaws are capable of tearing a wide range of prey ... this whale was a god of death to most of the animals that lived in its area," Abdullah Gohar, one of the scientists, told Insider.

The new whale is called Phiomicetus anubis, which the scientists named in part after Anubis, the canine-headed Egyptian god associated with mummification and the afterlife. It was likely a top predator at the time, similar to what a killer whale is today.

Kentucky WereWolf?

Bearzilla or WereWolf?

It is reported there are werewolves in the state of Kentucky. The state has plenty of food available for wild beasts including deer,  turkey and a large  free-ranging elk herd. Kentucky has plenty of remote areas and claims  the world’s longest cave system.

In 1944 in the rural parts of the state, called  the “Gateway” region a werewolf sighting was reported and  nicknamed the “Gateway Werewolf“.

They are also called Bearzillas. The first sighting was by an elderly man in  Nicholas County in 1972. However some say its been around since the 1940s. owever some say it has been around since the 1940s.

The name “Bearzilla” stuck because it looked like a bear crossed with a wolf . Eye-witness accounts described it as six to seven ( approx 2 metres) feet tall with  white or grey fur.It is said to have the body of a bear, human-like hands, claw-like nails, and the face, snout, and fangs of a wolf.A cast of its paw print is said to exist. The last known sighting occurring in 1989.

Then this article appeared on 20 February 2020   :

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8024859/Boy-13-killed-animal-attack-officials-dont-know-creature-killed-him.html

“A Kentucky teen died on Tuesday after being attacked by a 'canine-type' creature police have yet to identify. Kentucky State Police were called to a home in the Emmalena community in Knott County around 6pm on Tuesday following a report of an animal attack on a 13-year-old boy. His body was found on a mountainside behind the residence and Knott County Coroner Corey Watson pronounced him dead from suspected injuries stemming from an animal attack”

It was thought to be an attack by wild dogs .Apart from the sadness at the loss of a young life the word werewolf was uttered. Could Bearzilla have returned?  If you are about in the rural areas of Kentucky keep your eyes peeled and keep safe.

Another Nessie Sighting?

Sketch of something unexplained recorded on Official Loch Ness Monster Sightings Register

The Official Loch Ness Monster Sightings Register has recorded another sighting of something unexplained in the water, bringing the total so far this year to nine.

A sketch was provided for the latest reported sighting which happened on July 30.

The register, which is kept by Gary Campbell, states: "Mr Veacock visiting from the North West of England was parked up in the last lay by north of the castle scanning the loch with his binoculars when he noticed something two thirds across the loch away.

Loch Lubnaig Creature

Loch Lubnaig Monster

Loch Lubnaig (Lùbnaig means crooked in Gaelic). is a small freshwater loch near Callander in the Scottish Highlands. It is part of the Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park.

The loch is quite shallow nearly two-thirds being under 50 feet (15 m) in depth. The loch may be considered into two halves, defined  at the entrance of the Ardchillarie burn, where the bottom shallows and separates two principal deep depressions. The deepest part of the loch at 146 feet (45 m) is centrally located in the depression. There are two other depressions in which the depth exceeds 100 feet (30 m).So deep enough to hide a creature. Wild fish in the loch include Salmon, Perch and Brown Trout. So a good food supply.

Many locals believe in the loch monster called Lubhi a smaller distant cousin of Nessie. Eye witnesses claim to have seen small humps appearing on the surface of Loch Lubnaig. It is not unusual to see parked cars in lay-bys with tourists pointing cameras convinced they spotted something on the surface of the loch. The steep mountain slopes add to the magical feel of the loch.

Loch Lomond in the same national park also claims to have a monster.

Loch Lomond is second only to Loch Ness in volume of water. For years there have been reports by residents living near the loch of a strange creature seen in the water. Some eyewitnesses describe the creature as being like the Loch Ness monster, a plesiosaur like creature, others say it looks like a large crocodile. Read rest here:

Could they be the same creature moving overland between lochs in search of food? Or could they be two distinctly separate creatures ,one crocodile like, one humped? What do you think? Comments welcome but please remember all comments go to a moderator so may take time to appear.

 Great Lakes Monsters

An article caught my eye:

Extracts :Operated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the 180-foot Lake Guardian is the largest research vessel on the Great Lakes. When the ice melts each spring, the ship visits each of the five lakes to measure basic water quality and sample the “lower food web” -- the tiny animals, plants, and algae that support fish and other aquatic life.

The Lake Guardian hits Lake Michigan first in early April, then heads east to Huron and Erie before visiting Ontario. Lake Superior, where the ship was headed on Tuesday, is the last stop because the ice there tends to linger longer. It will be months before the data collected they collected on Lake Ontario will be analyzed, but Scofield, a Texas native who earned a doctorate degree from Cornell University three years ago, said it appears water quality and nutrient loads in the lake are relatively stable -- at least compared to the past.

By the 1960s, human interaction with Lake Ontario had changed it for the worse. Wanton discharges of sewage and man-made fertilizers, not to mention toxic chemicals, had degraded water quality. The water was choked with aquatic plants and algae, including the species that that washes up on the shore and fouls beaches was everywhere. The lake was a pit.Concerted efforts in the United States and Canada in the 1970s reduced the pollutants being dumped in the lake, and water quality rebounded. Rotting algae became rare along the shoreline.

Then, beginning in the late 1980s, oceangoing freighters inadvertently brought zebra and quagga mussels to the Great Lakes from waterways in the former Soviet Union. With none of their natural predators to keep them in check, the small molluscs spread uncontrolled. They feed by filtered tiny phytoplankton (aquatic plants) and algae out of the water, and were so numerous they dramatically improved water clarity. This might be considered a good thing, except that in so doing they deprived native species of that food source.

What does all this pollution and none native species invasion mean for the so called monsters resident in the lakes? Are they still alive or have they been killed off by pollution? Lack of recent sightings may indicate the worse.Read about them below.

The Search for the Water Horse of Lake Champlain

Water Horse of Lake Champlain - the search  by Katy Elizabeth

A newly published book that I read in one sitting.

The book has three main themes to it. One is how Katy Elizabeth got involved with the hunt for Champ and her subsequent experiences. Two is candidates for Champ and conclusions from that. Three is the history of the search brought up to date with recent sightings and sonar traces.

It is written in an easy style to read and shows extensive background research .Good clear illustrations and photos. This is definitely one every cryptozoologist should have on their shelves. I finished the book feeling optimistic about the future of champ research .

Water Dragon of Lake Storsjön

Lake Storsjön Dragon

Lake Storsjön in Sweden is another lake that was brought into being during the ice age. It is about 300 feet (100 metres)deep. Stories of a monster called Storsjöodjuret have persisted for 400 years. It is a water dragon according to myth, is a terrifying creature with serpentine or reptilian features .There are said to be 200 documented witness reports from 500 people who have seen Storsjöodjuret. It is described as serpentine and humped with large eyes. Many more have spoken about their experiences, but haven´t submitted a written testimony.

In 1635, Mogens Pedersen from Herdal, wrote down the legend about two trolls who were boiling a mixture in a large kettle on the shore of the lake. When they had boiled the mixture for years and years, the contents of the kettle began to groan and wail and there was a loud bang. "A strange animal with a black serpentlike body and a cat-like head jumped out of the kettle and disappeared into the lake. The monster enjoyed living in the lake, it grew unbelievably large and terrorised the people living on the shores of the lake. After some time it extended all the way around the island Frösön, and could bite its own tail."

In an 1878 sighting, a local mechanic reportedly saw something craning its neck past the water's surface. He described it as having a "snake-like head that was larger than what I figured the neck could support."

Then on October 31st, 1898 there was a report in the local paper, Jämtlandsposten ,about M.P. Jöns Bromée´s experience outside Billsta, Hackås in 1863: "...there was a large ugly monster in the lake and we decided to pursue it. Two shotguns were loaded and two boats equipped in haste. Meanwhile the monster had slipped away from the shore, into the water, and began to move slowly away. At that point, it resembled 10 or 12 shiny black anchors linked together and following each other..."

In 1920 Per Jönsson from Andersön said he seen Storsjöodjuret three times. In a recorded interview from 1960 he tells of an encounter outside Digernäs in 1920: "...I saw that big grey-green body between the waves. The water boiled around me. I saw that its tail was moving with powerful strokes. After a hundred metres or so it disappeared without a trace. A few days later they saw it from the peninsula Rödön. It must have gone off that way..."

IN July 1931 Storsjöodjuret appeared at Myrviken in front of Anders Bergqvist and Jonas Hansson. The County Prosecutor, Mr. Carlsson, was asked by the County Authorities to make a more detailed investigation of which part of the report read:"Mr. Hansson had observed a large object on the surface of the water. The object consisted of a globelike form, the upper part of which was above the water. The height of this object above the water was about 10 centimetres, possibly a bit more. Behind the globe there was a bow-shaped hump..."

In 1947 in Jämtlands tidning (another local newspaper), Anna Rahm told of her experienced at Åssjön outside Rösta: "The monster was 3 metres long and grey like an elephant with a smooth, hard skin. Its head was as big as a jug and its back was dented in places. In its terrifying and wide mouth its tongue moved up and down in a threatening manner; its eyes rolled, as I've said and its ears were large and stood out. It seemed to have a large, powerful tail. We only saw the upper part of it but its back was wide and it wasn't a serpent as has been said earlier. That I'm sure..."

In 1972 a sighting was reported by two Swedish military airmen on holiday

Fisheries officer Ragnar Björks, 73, was out checking fishing permits on Sweden’s Lake Storsjön when he had the fright of his life. A huge tail suddenly broke the surface near Björk’s 12 foot (4 metres) row boat. The creature attached to the tail appeared to be 18 feet (6 metres) long, grey-brown on top with a yellow underbelly. When Björks was alongside the monster, he struck at it with his oar, hitting it on the back. The creature then slapped the water with its tail and the rowboat was thrown nine (3 metres)to twelve feet(4 metres)into the air. ‘At first I didn’t believe that there was any monster in the Storsjön…but now I am convinced.'”

Then On the 10th of August 1983 Carina Johnson went out in the Bay of Brunflo in a boat . She reports:"Suddenly I saw something that looked like birds about to take off, far out into the lake. They looked like three white gulls moving towards Östersund at an incredible speed...as we came closer it changed direction away from us and then suddenly the water became still and calm. I had a feeling that the thing was relatively large, and what struck me afterwards was that it moved so fast."

In 1994 a young man and his father on a canoe trip witnessed something strange "...Suddenly I saw something like a plough in the water. The water "divided" as when you go water-skiing. It went on for about 10-15 seconds..."

More recently in August 2008 A Swedish documentary film crew claimed to have caught the monster on film. https://www.thelocal.se/20080828/13980/

At the museum Jamtli in Östersund In the Storsjöodjurs exhibition there are, among other things, the giant iron trap that was once used to attempt to catch the Storsjöodjur. The trap was then baited with a pig, with no success.

The stories of the creature have been around a long time . The description sounds once again like a giant eel and would explain the cat like or even dog like  head some people describe. The film as usual is not clear and is no doubt disputed evidence by some. It is one more glacial lake from the ice age with a large creature being reported.
