Skull fragments reveal new ancient crocodile species

Two fossilised skull fragments from a 2ft (60cm) crocodile found on the Isle of Wight point to the discovery of a new ancient species, a study has found.The pieces - a snout and back part of the skull - were found by different private collectors three months apart.Experts at the Dinosaur Isle museum near Sandown found the 126 million-year-old fragments "fitted together perfectly to make a complete skull".The species has been named Koumpiodontosuchus aprosdokiti.

Divers go to search for Lake Labynkyr Monster

Lake  Labynkyr is a deep lake is believed to shelter a lake monster like Nessie, but smaller and more crocodile like. The lake is situated on the territory of Oimyakon uluss. Legends speak about the monster that lives deep in the water of the legendary lake and attacks dogs, reindeers and even people. Stories say how one day the monster wiped out a caravan of Even ( one of the native peoples in the area)people. There are several documented encounters. The public first learned about the monster in the 1950's from the diaries of soviet geologist named Tverdohlebov. Since then several expeditions have set out to prove or disprove the existence of a monster. It is said that it could be a huge pike, a water mammoth, a reptile or a plesiosaurus, or even something from the parallel world.

Sightings of 'primeval monsters' in Siberia's Lake Labynkyr were made before 'Nessie' was spotted in Scotland.An expedition by the Russian Geographic Society is expected today to reach the mysterious lake which puzzles scientists by not completely freezing even when the air temperature is minus 60C. The team reached Oymyakon, the coldest settlement in the world and were driving on from there in special KAMAZ vehicles.

30,000-year-old giant virus 'comes back to life'

An ancient virus has "come back to life" after lying dormant for at least 30,000 years, scientists say. It was found frozen in a deep layer of the Siberian permafrost, but after it thawed it became infectious once again. The French scientists say the contagion poses no danger to humans or animals, but other viruses could be unleashed as the ground becomes exposed. The study is published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS). Professor Jean-Michel Claverie, from the National Centre of Scientific Research (CNRS) at the University of Aix-Marseille in France, said: "This is the first time we've seen a virus that's still infectious after this length of time."

Scientists have had the first look at the life that thrives in one of the deepest spots in the ocean. An expedition to the unexplored New Hebrides trench in the Pacific has revealed that cusk eels and crustaceans teem more than 7,000m (23,000ft) down. The team used an unmanned lander fitted with cameras to film the deep-sea creatures. The scientists said the ecology of this trench differed with other regions of the deep that had been studied.

Florida Woman Close Encounter with Bigfoot

MILTON, Fla. — A woman says a strange animal that “looked like a monkey” broke into her kitchen Friday afternoon. The incident allegedly occurred in a country house located about 35 miles west of the town. Elizabeth Rantellatti, 45, told Cryptozoology News that she is still shaken by the sighting.
