rare creature washed up

Rare saber-toothed whale washes ashore in Venice Beach
By Jason Wells
A rare whale known for its saber-like teeth and preference for frigid subarctic waters washed ashore in a highly unlikely place Tuesday night: Venice Beach. The female Stejneger’s beaked whale — also known as the Saber-toothed whale — was loaded onto the bed of a truck early Wednesday and taken for an necropsy that will give scientists a rare glimpse into the lives of the elusive mammals. So rare, in fact, it sent Nick Fash, an education specialist for Heal the Bay, pedaling his bike down to the site "as fast as I could."

520 million year old fossil had nervous system

Big clawed fossil had spider-like brain
By Melissa Hogenboom Science reporter, BBC News
Scientists have discovered the best-preserved nervous system in an ancient fossil. Dating back 520 million years, the clawed spider-like fossil shows clear evidence of a brain and of nerve cords running through the creature's trunk. The specimen now confirms that the ancestors of spiders and scorpions were related, but branched off more than half-a-billion years ago.

Ancient  creatures may have been more evolved than first thought. If cryptids are ancient creatures still around today, they may be more sophisticated than we imagined .

oldest blood discovered

46-million-year-old mosquito's last meal is the oldest blood ever discovered
By Nigel Atkins
The ancient insect was so well-preserved because it had been trapped in mudstone, meaning the organic remains decomposed slowly.
The oldest blood known has been found in a mosquito which was fossilised 46 million years ago. It died soon after feeding and was perfectly preserved in the shale of a mountain range in Montana, USA.Expert Dr Dale Greenwalt used state of the art technology to identify the blood in the previously unknown species of mozzie. He told Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences that the “improbable find” showed how little insects have changed.

Jurassic Park anyone? It does pose the question if insects have remained unchanged what else may have done the same?  So those who believe in  living dinosaurs, food for thought!

new discoveries:giant fish and links to Iceman

New Species of Giant Fish Arapaima Discovered in Brazil
Oct 11, 2013 by Natali Anderson
Prof Donald Stewart from Department of Environmental and Forest Biology at State University of New York has described a new species of arapaima from the central Amazon of Brazil. Arapaima, one of the world’s biggest freshwater fish and the largest freshwater fish of South America, is unique among fish – it can breathe air. The largest specimens can reach more than 2.5 m in length and weigh up to 200 kg.

Link to Oetzi the Iceman found in living Austrians
Austrian scientists have found that 19 Tyrolean men alive today are related to Oetzi the Iceman, whose 5,300-year-old frozen body was found in the Alps.Their relationship was established through DNA analysis by scientists from the Institute of Legal Medicine at Innsbruck Medical University. The men have not been told about their connection to Oetzi. The DNA tests were taken from blood donors in Tyrol. A particular genetic mutation was matched, the APA news agency reports.

wonder if any of us are related to bigfoot?
