Sea monsters and opportunities missed

I was looking at some old sea monster reports.

One by Captain James Stockdale from  May 1830. Stockdale and his  crew of the barque Rob Roy were near the island of St Helena when they heard a  noise in the water. They were astounded to view the head of “a great thundering sea snake” whose head rose six feet( 2 metres) out of the water “as square with our topsail, his tail was square with the foremast”. Stockdale said his ship was 171ft long ( 56 metres)with the foremast 42ft ( 14 metres)from the stern, which would make the monster 129ft long( 42metres). He wrote in his report to the ship’s owners  “If I had not seen it I could not have believed it but there was no mistake or doubt of its length – for the brute was so close I could even smell his nasty fishy smell.”

A Board of Trade file from 1857 contains a report, from near the same South Atlantic island , by a Commander George Henry Harrington of the merchant ship Castilan, of a similar sighting. On the 13^th of  December  he and two officers saw “a huge marine animal” which suddenly reared out of the water just 20ft( 6 /7 metres approx) from the ship.It had a  long neck and a dark head, shaped “like a long buoy” , white spotted,  “with a kind of scroll or ruff encircling it”. The creature submerge, then reappeared, leaving no doubt they were watching a sea monster “of extraordinary length moving slowly towards the land”. The boatswain, who watched it for some time, estimated  that it was more than double the length of the ship, which was 250 feet long . This makes the sea monster 500 feet long(165 metres ).

What I wonder is why nothing seems to have been done at the time. No one seems to have gone to investigate the stories. Maybe they thought the crew had been on the rum or at sea too long? I wonder if it happened today would we investigate? I suspect even today, if it was no threat to shipping ,that no one would bother. At the heart of everything lies commerce and if there is no threat to that commerce ,things will be ignored. I can’t help feeling so many opportunities will have been missed by scientists , because something unusual  was no threat, and the reports being filed away in MOD or other organisations files as not important. By the time the general public get to read the reports/ files it is too late to have an investigation. What wonders have been missed, what creatures remain undiscovered, or that may now be extinct?

"Most of my friends say, leave it up to Greg to kill a Chupacabra," said Greg Bludau. Bludau was out on a simple hog hunt in East Brazos County when he ran into something strange."My initial reaction was, am I really witnessing what I'm witnessing," Bludau asked himself.Greg came across this animal eating on a hog carcass, when he decided to take action."I just made the decision that it would be an ethical and moral thing to do to put the animal out of its misery," said Bludau.But the fact he might have bagged a legend made for big news."I was kind of excited, I told a few friends. It was a big story on Facebook as well," joked the Sam Houston State student.We wanted to make sure the animal Greg shot wasn't the mythical Chupacabra so we took the pictures to the Texas AgriLife Extension Service and the USDA. They're findings...it's a coyote.It didn't take long for Doug Steen with the USDA Wildlife Services to figure out what the supposed Chupacabra was. A simple coyote with a bad case of sarcoptic mange or scabies."You see flare-up's on occasion. Usually localized because it is a contagious ailment," said Steen.The news wasn't a surprise to Greg."I don't think the Chupacabra is a real creature. I think it's just a coyote with mange. A terrible disease to have," said Bludau."These animals are suffering, it can lead to and cause starvation," said Steen.But that still begs the question, could the Chupacabra still be out there?"I've never seen any cryptozoological creatures that I could not explain," joked Steen.

EFFORTS to gain World Heritage site status for Loch Ness and the Great Glen have been strengthened by plans for two rival multi-million pound visitor centres being given the green light yesterday.According to the organisation behind the heritage bid, the Loch Ness-side proposals will form an important piece of the ambitious campaign alongside popular events such as RockNess and the Baxters Loch Ness Marathon.The plans, which will see two harbours built 500 metres apart at Brackla in the first major lochside development in decades, were approved by area councillors at a special planning applications committee meeting in Inverness.A £2 million centre is proposed by brothers Robbie and David Bremner, near the Clansman Hotel, while a £2.5 million complex is planned by Jacobite Cruises on land nearby.World heritage bidder Destination Loch Ness has backed the project."With these two developments there are a lot of good things happening and about to happen around Loch Ness," said Graeme Ambrose, the executive director of the not-for-profit organisation."If all these come together we will be in a very much stronger position to ultimately go for that long-term aspiration of World Heritage status."Qualities that could earn the accolade for Loch Ness and the Great Glen were set out in November 2008. They make no mention of Nessie, but do include historical and cultural features such as Urquhart Castle and the annual RockNess music festive.At yesterday's meeting not everyone was happy - Inverness South councillor Jim Crawford was among those who voted against approval claiming it might set a precedent for future developments and increased commercialisation."Where do we stop on Loch Ness and the commercialisation of Loch Ness? Someone said to me this morning that we are going to make a Disneyworld of this," he said.

Huge lobster saved from the pot

LONDON (Reuters) - One of the biggest and oldest lobsters ever caught in Britain has been saved from the pot and will live out the rest of its long life in an aquarium.The massive crustacean measures close to one meter (3 feet) in length and weighs more than 4 kg (9 lb)."He's a fantastic specimen and by his size alone he has got to be at least 50 years old," said Lindsay Holloway of the Blue Reef aquarium in Portsmouth, southern England where the lobster now lives."He is an amazing creature and it's quite an achievement to have reached such an impressive age," he added.The lobster was caught in around 14 feet of water by a compassionate angler fishing for sole in Bracklesham Bay, off the coast of West Sussex.Lobsters are among the planet's oldest inhabitants with fossil remains found dating back more than 100 million years. They are also extremely long-lived with some reaching ages of over 80 years.The aquarium said the heaviest recorded crustacean is an Atlantic lobster nicknamed Mike who was caught in 1934 and tipped the scales at an awesome 19 kg.
