Honey Island Swamp Monster in the news and a story of a bigfoot encounter in the woods.

Cryptozoologists search for infamous cryptid
By By Patrick Senn SPECIAL TO THE VANGUARD Published: Monday, March 28, 2011
In the Honey Island Swamp just outside of Slidell, La., about a two-hour drive from the University of South Alabama, there have been numerous reports for more than 40 years of groups of large creatures that resemble Bigfoot. USA PSI couldn’t resist the opportunity to perform a thorough investigation of a cryptid residing practically in our own backyard. There are several views when it comes to classifying reports of large hairy monsters. Of course, many sightings are soon revealed to be men in gorilla suits, or something equivalent; after all, who could turn down a chance at being the next huge hoax sensation? The two other most common types of reported phenomena fall into one of two categories. The first is the typical Bigfoot-esque cryptid, best explained as a kind of primate not yet identified by modern science. These creatures generally avoid people, tend to be between six and seven feet tall, and behave like fairly intelligent animals, often traveling in groups. According to John Michael Greer, Grand Archdruid of North America and author of Monsters: An Investigator’s Guide to Magical Beings, the other type is a class of supernatural being. Greer mentions that in keeping with the paranormal research community’s traditional sense of humor, such a creature is known as a Big Hairy Monster (BHM). BHMs are said to vary dramatically in size, shape, and features. They are often reported as having between two and six toes, glowing eyes, and fangs, and usually behave much more aggressively toward people than a typical Sasquatch. In accord with their supernatural nature, they are solitary beings who seem to appear and vanish without a trace. According to Greer, BHMs are beings that exist on a spiritual realm not generally observed by people, like fairies and forest nymphs of lore. USA PSI set out on a three-day expedition last winter to determine if the creature reported to live in Honey Island Swamp did in fact exist. If so, we would attempt to gather enough evidence to form a theory of what type of hairy woodland creature it might be.

In the next article we will explain the methodology used in our investigation, what we learned from the witnesses we spoke with, and other evidence we gathered during our time in the swamp.

I also came across this story of a bigfoot encounter:
COLUMN: Sasquatch leaves a lasting memory by Chris Bush
One of my co-workers asked me, jokingly, if I saw any sasquatches on my recent holidays.
No, but ….
Extract:
“The last of the twilight was fading, but the moon was full, so there was plenty of light to see by. What walked out of the woods was no bear.It was about 12 metres from us, not just walking upright, but taking big easy strides across the rocks. About halfway across the creek bed it stopped, as if it realized suddenly that we were there, and turned to look at us.It was nearly two metres tall and its body was proportioned just like a large man’s, except its forearms were a little longer than ours, so its hands hung closer to its knees. Its body was covered in hair, but it was so fine, almost like an Irish setter’s, that you could see its muscle definition underneath. I remember his forearm muscles being clearly defined and, yup, “it” was definitely a “he”.He just stood there and sort of regarded us for a moment as we gaped back in stunned silence. His face appeared human and was covered in an even finer layer of hair. His eyes were a medium shade and when I looked in them I remember thinking, “That’s a man”

Thor Heyerdahl died aged 87 in Italy

RIP a great explorer who had some cryptid encounters on his voyages. A great man who was brave and not afraid  to do something different. His spirit will live on I am sure in modern explorers.

Read his cryptid encounter here  : http://cryptozoo-oscity.blogspot.com/search?q=Thor+Heyerdahl

Apologies everyone if this was misleading. My fault for not telling C what I was aiming for. He did die in 2002 . The idea was to look at famous people who have had cryptid sightings.  Mea culpa !

Rare find in Canada

Rare dinosaur found in Canada's oil sands
TORONTO (Reuters) - The Canadian oil sands, a vast expanse of tar and sand being mined for crude oil, yielded treasure of another kind this week when an oil company worker unearthed a 110-million-year-old dinosaur fossil that wasn't supposed to be there. The fossil is an ankylosaur, a plant-eating dinosaur with powerful limbs, armor plating and a club-like tail. Finding it in this region of northern Alberta was a surprise because millions of years ago the area was covered by water."We've never found a dinosaur in this location," Donald Henderson, a curator at Alberta's Royal Tyrrell Museum, which is devoted to dinosaurs, said on Friday. "Because the area was once a sea, most finds are invertebrates such as clams and ammonites."The ankylosaur that was found by the oil worker is expected to be about 5 meters (16-1/2 feet) long and 2 meters (6-1/2 feet) wide.It is pretty amazing that it survived in such good condition," said Henderson, noting the fossil was three dimensional, not flattened by the heavy rock sediment."It is also the earliest complete dinosaur that we have from this province."The fossil was found on Wednesday by a Suncor Energy shovel operator who was clearing ground ahead of development. By a quirk of fate, the worker had visited the Royal Tyrrell dinosaur museum in southern Alberta just the week before.Henderson suggested he may have had dinosaurs on the brain. "Maybe his mind was subconsciously prepared."Suncor has suspended work at the site and has given scientists a three-week window to remove the fossil and ship it to the Royal Tyrrell museum. The last major fossil find in northern Alberta was a giant reptile called an ichthyosaur, which was found 10 years ago near Fort McMurray.

The question is, how did it get there? Was it swimming and drown or was it dragged from the shore by a marine creature? Maybe they will be able to find out when it is examined, especially if there are bite marks.

Institute set up to research Yeti

Russia sets up university institute to study the yeti after spate of sightings
Last updated at 6:26 PM on 22nd March 2011
Yeti: Sightings are on the rise in Siberia.Russia is setting up a university research institute to study the Yeti after a spate of claimed recent sightings in Siberia.  Scientists say they have found 15 witnesses in the past year who gave statements that they saw the Abominable Snowman in one remote area . 'We spoke to local residents', said Dr Igor Burtsev, who conducted an expedition last summer and will head the new institute at Kemerovo State University. 'They told us Yetis were stealing their animals.'The academic claims around 30 Yetis live in a remote region of Mount Shoria in in southern Siberia. He strongly denies accusations that the 'sightings' are a bizarre ruse to attract tourists to the far-flung region. Reports say the two-legged creatures are heavy-set, more around 7ft tall and resemble bears. 'Their bodies were covered in red and black fur, and they could climb trees,' said one account. One villager, Afanasy Kiskorov, even claimed to scientists that he rescued a Yeti on a hunting trip a year ago. The creature was screaming in fear after falling into a swollen mountain river, he said. His version suggested a 'strange creature, looking like a huge man which tried several times to get out of water and to stand up on both feet, but dropped into the water each time and was howling'.As his fellow-hunters 'froze' in amazement, Kiskorov held out a dry tree trunk. 'The creature clutched to it and crawled to the bank,' he said.

Man says he filmed Bigfoot crossing the road.

Knobby or his kin? Shelby man captures video of bigfoot sighting
Wednesday, Mar 23 2011, 10:04 pm
BOSTIC — Tufts of bushy brown fur. Thick, powerful legs supporting a stocky frame. If it wasn't Knobby, Thomas Byers thinks the Cleveland County bigfoot has a close cousin. The Shelby native says he saw an apelike creature dart across the road during a trip through the hills below South Mountains State Park Tuesday evening. Byers and friend Carolyn Wright had planned to watch for paranormal phenomena at an old church graveyard when the shrouded, shuffling figure crossed their path."She was hollering, 'What is it, what is it?' and I couldn't even speak," Byers said. "It was the most amazing thing I've ever seen. It looked like it was about 300 pounds and it was somewhere close to 7 feet tall. It came out of the field and came through the briars and bushes onto the road."Byers snapped photographs and recorded a brief video of the sighting with a pocket digital camera. As is often the case with footage of the camera-shy sasquatch, Byers' film is blurry and indistinct. He said the darkening sky made clearer pictures impossible, but he's convinced the creature was genuine."I saw its private parts," he said. I don't think it was anybody in a suit or anything like that. It was definitely male."
