Megalodon and Mayan Monsters
By TOM METCALFE LIVESCIENCE.COM December 14, 2016, 4:03 PM
Giant megalodon shark teeth may have inspired Mayan monster myths
Giant fossilized teeth from extinct megalodon sharks may have inspired portrayals of a primordial sea monster in Mesoamerican creation myths, according to a new study of the concepts of sharks in ancient Mayan society.
The study looked at how the Maya combined a practical, prescientific knowledge of sharks with their traditional understanding of the world around them as the creation of gods and monsters.
In the research paper, titled “Sharks in the Jungle: real and imagined sea monsters of the Maya,” published online Nov. 21 in the journal Antiquity, Sarah Newman, an archaeologist at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia, wrote that fossilized teeth from the extinct shark species Carcharodon megalodon were used in sacred offerings at several ancient Mayan sites, such as Palenque in southern Mexico, where archaeologists have found 13 megalodon teeth. [See Photos of Megalodon Sharks and How They Inspired Mayan Myths]
Giant megalodon sharks were apex predators of the world’s oceans from around 23 million years ago until 2.6 million years ago. Their teeth, jaws and vertebrae have been found at many sites in Central America.
Newman said ancient Mayan depictions of a sea monster named “Sipak” — also known as Cipactli (which translates to “Spiny One”) to the Aztecs of central Mexico — have a single giant tooth that bears a strong resemblance to the fossilized megalodon teeth from sacred offerings found at Mayan sites.

I wonder what other monster myths may have come from fossil finds? There is a theory that dinosaur bones gave rise to stories about dragons.

Hunter spends winter searching for Siberia's Nessie
New
signs of Siberia's Nessie? A dark creature in the lake and broken fishing nets
By Ann Liesowska 01 November 2016
Andrey Solovyev will spend winter on shores of lake Labynkyr. Braving
temperatures of below minus 50C, and with no other living soul in a radius of
150 kilometres, this 32 year old adventurer walked for ten days to reach one of
Russia's most remote and mysterious lakes in a one-man search for the monster
that is reputed to inhabit its deep waters. He has regularly met brown
bears roaming these wild shores, although they are now ready for hibernation,
and wolves are never far away. But it is a different beast he is seeking to see
and chronicle - Siberia's own Loch Ness monster.Home for him through the winter
is a simple wooden hut overlooking the ice-covered lake. Expeditions here are
rare, but usually academics and others seeking to prove or disprove the
Labynkyr Devil's existence come in summer, when the waters are unfrozen, and
then stay a week or two.Winter temperatures here in the coldest inhabited
district in the world are likely to plummet well under 50C, although this week
the nights are milder, only minus 32C or so. Yet Andrey, from Voronezh, is
undaunted, having already spent 103 days in solitude on the lakeside, living on
fish he catches, wild onion which he gathered and pickled earlier, as well as
mushrooms and berries he collected before the big freeze.Read rest and see pics here : http://siberiantimes.com/other/others/features/f0268-new-signs-of-siberias-nessie-a-dark-creature-in-the-lake-and-broken-fishing-nets/

Loch Ness Monster sightings from the past.
I am re-posting this from September 2011 .
monster sighting in Obit column
Jane Nelson
Jane
Nelson, who died on August 1 aged 95, was a gifted gardener,
indefatigable charity worker and a prize-winning breeder of Highland
cattle at her estate in Argyllshire.
Extract: On
December 30 1933 Jane, her sister Kathleen and their father saw the
Loch Ness monster. In Jane’s own words: “We were driving along Loch Ness
looking for it one very stormy day when suddenly I saw two bumps
sticking out of the water, so we all got out to look at it. Luckily we
had some field glasses, and we watched it for 40 minutes swimming around
in the loch. More and more bumps kept appearing until we finally saw
nine, and then it began swimming away more quickly; but it was snowing
so hard by this time that we lost sight of it.” The sighting was reported with some excitement in the Inverness Courier. Jane thought she saw the monster on another occasion a few years later, although it was a less convincing event: “This time only one huge bump was sticking out and was going very fast across the loch.”

Loch Ness Monster FOUND at last? Astonishing new photo of Nessie
A WHISKY warehouse worker has taken a picture of what could be one of the most convincing Loch Ness Monster sightings to date.
The father-of-four spends most of his weekends in the region taking photographs of the stunning natural beauty.
But it was not until he got back to his home in Nigg, Invergordon, that he noticed three humps emerging from the water which he thinks could be the elusive monster.

The owner of the video, a 33-year-old Navy veteran and IT student who
provided a full name but asked to remain anonymous, told Cryptozoology
News that the sighting took place back in late July.
” I had placed a motion activated camera trap at the water’s edge. At 4:00 a.m., in the darkness, it recorded video of an unusual animal,” he said.
The 31-second-long video file, which he titled Champ 2016, shows footage taken by two different cameras in a split screen containing something floating or swimming through the dark water.

The Hunt for the Humber Monster
Hunt is on for terrifying monster lurking in the depths of the Humber River
Humber Monster Watch has launched a campaign to track down the creature.
By Lucy Pasha-Robinson
The hunt is on to track down the "Humber Monster", a terrifying sea
creature said to have a head the size of an elephant, six humps and
flashing eyes.Historian Mike Covell, from Humber Monster Watch, is heading the campaign which aims to track down the creature ahead of Hull being crowned UK City of Culture in 2017.
Speaking to The Express, he said: "Throughout the 1920s, trawlermen from Hull had reported strange sightings of a creature in the Humber and the North Sea.
"In 1923, a Hornsea school teacher was swimming off the coast when he was attacked by an unknown sea creature."
Throughout the 1920s, the Humber Monster terrorised the city's residents, with sightings of the beast filling the pages of the local press. It was said the beast, with its gargantuan head and oddly shaped body, could travel faster than 100mph.
According to the Hull Daily Mail, in 1934, Thomas Atkinson suffered a frightening encounter with the monster. He had been on the shores of the river with his wife and children when he spotted a black creature swimming in the water. It had turned towards the family and reportedly stared at them with "eyes the size of portholes" until they fled in horror.

I had heard of creatures in the sea off Hull being reported and even contacted the Maritime Museum but they were unable to provide any information.Be interesting to see if there are any developments.

Has Nessie had kids? Incredible new snaps capture TWO Scottish monsters
A DAD is convinced he captured TWO Loch Ness monsters at large.Ian Campbell, 56, was on a bicycle ride with his son and a friend when he saw two gigantic "creatures" swimming across Loch Ness.
The beasts' eerie resemblance with the Nessies stunned the dad, from Taynuilt in Argyll, Scotland.
The council regulatory officer said: "At the time we saw it we had stopped for a rest and to admire the view. It seemed to appear suddenly from nowhere.
"I said to my son: 'What is that in the water?' He said to me that it looked like a big animal.
"I was saying to my son that we had just seen the Loch Ness monster."

By David

A
SCEPTICAL student has become a Nessie convert after a close encounter with the
mythical monster.
Startled
Jolene Lin captured this photo of a “snake-like head” poking out of Loch Ness
during a pleasure cruise last week.Prior to the sighting, the 24-year-old
student from London, pictured, was a non-believer.But the drizzly long distance
