For the Mirror  “or people talking about Bigfoot sightings and other offbeat topics like ghosts and UFOS, they're "some of the most down-to-earth people I've ever met,'' said David Rupert, the central Pennsylvania director of the Pennsylvania Bigfoot Society.
"They're just a great bunch of people to be with,'' he said. "They're amazing.''
Locally, investigations into reported sightings continues. Rupert, a welding instructor who lives in Reynoldsville, Clearfield County, has been a fan of Bigfoot since he was in elementary school when his mom bought him a book on the legendary tall, hairy creature. The book was two-sided: you read one side on Bigfoot, flipped it over, and then read the other side that detailed the tale of the Loch Ness Monster. But it was Bigfoot that kept him, and now his wife and two sons, 11 and 14, hooked. They're all members of the state society that got started in 1998 and documents Bigfoot sightings across the state.The family is also involved with a larger group that investigates sightings of UFOs (Unidentified Flying Objects) and ghosts.But Rupert has never seen Bigfoot and he's not 100 percent sure it exists. He just wants to spend a lot of time outdoors with his family and he also wants to satisfy his curiosity about the elusive creature."I welcome the possibility,'' he said. "With so many sightings out there, somebody is seeing something.''

Many human 'prototypes' coexisted in Africa

Fossils from Northern Kenya show that a new species of human lived two million years ago, researchers say. The discoveries suggests that at least three distinct species of humans co-existed in Africa. The research adds to a growing body of evidence that runs counter to the popular perception that there was a linear evolution from early primates to modern humans. The research has been published in the journal Nature. Anthropologists have discovered three human fossils that are between 1.78 and 1.95 million years old. The specimens are of a face and two jawbones with teeth.

The finds back the view that a skull found in 1972 is of a separate species of human, known as Homo rudolfensis. The skull was markedly different to any others from that time. It had a relatively large brain and long flat face. But for 40 years the skull was the only example of the creature and so it was impossible to say for sure whether the individual was an unusual specimen or a member of a new species. With the discovery of the three new fossils researchers can say with more certainty that H.rudolfensis really was a separate type of human that existed around two million years ago alongside other species of humans.

Lake Superior to be examined by Robot Divers

Robot divers to report on Lake Superior's depths

DULUTH, Minn. — With its frigid, often ice-choked water and legendary storms, Lake Superior can be a dangerous place for scientists to conduct research. "In Lake Superior, the season where it's nice to go out there is relatively short," University of Minnesota Duluth physics professor Jay Austin said. But he said "there's science year round out there." Aiming to tap the wealth of information deep inside Lake Superior, Austin and other researchers are preparing to send two mechanical divers in the big, cold lake for a long time. They plan to test one of the divers Wednesday. Funded by a $485,000 National Science Foundation grant, the new devices, called "Autonomous Moored Platforms," will travel up and down the depths on cables anchored to the lake bottom. They'll collect readings on water temperature, currents and a long list of other data points. In the long run they could actually save researchers money. A single day on a research vessel costs roughly $7,000. Austin, lead investigator on the new project at the school's Large Lakes Observatory said the technology will offer a view of Lake Superior science has never had before.

New swimming cave cricket species filmed

A swimming cricket was one of three "new species" discovered by a TV crew filming in South America.The "unbelievable" insect find was captured on camera along with a no-eyed harvestman and a cave catfish.The trio were found in a remote Venezuelan tepui, a type of table-top mountain in the region."We've only named about a million species of insects and there are almost certainly five to eight million undescribed," said Dr George McGavin.

The image was captured by Mr Edwards from his passenger boat, Nessie Hunter IV, while using sonar to search for old engines used to build the A82 which were supposedly dumped in the loch, south of the Clansman Hotel at Brackla. I was just about to return to Temple Pier (in Drumnadrochit) and I went to the back of the boat which was facing the pier and that’s when I saw it," said 60-year-old Mr Edwards, a lifelong believer in the monster.

"It was slowly moving up the loch towards Urquhart Castle and it was a dark grey colour.

"It was quite a fair way from the boat, probably about half a mile away but it’s difficult to tell in water."

After watching the object for five to 10 minutes, Mr Edwards said it slowly sank below the surface and never resurfaced.

"I’m convinced I was seeing Nessie as I believe in these creatures. Far too many people have being seeing them for far too long," he said.Determined to get more evidence, Mr Edwards, who thinks there is more than one giant creature lurking below the loch, used his vessel’s sonar to make a contact but to no avail.

 Under the comments in the Inverness Courier was this remark by a Mr Brian MacGregor "I know of two ladies who have recently seen the same sort of thing as Mr Edwards in the Loch, quite near Dores Inn but no way would they ever go to the press with the news for fear of attracting the ridicule that we see on this page today."says it all really doesn't it?

Invergordon female and dog injured by "large cat"

A DOG and its female owner were injured in an encounter with a large "feral" cat in an Invergordon garden, according to police.Northern Constabulary issued a statement today (Tuesday) advising the public not to approach the animal, which is described as a "larger than normal" black cat.It was sighted at 1pm last Thursday when it was disturbed in the rear garden of a house in Inverbreakie.The cat injured the dog and its owner as it tried to flee – the pet suffered a cut eyelid and the female was scratched on her arms as she intervened.

I am not so sure this was a big cat in terms of what we think of as a big cat , but a large feral domestic cat.Feral cats can be quite vicious when cornered,because they are scared .

Oggie of Onondaga Lake

Located northwest of Syracuse, New York and south of Lake Ontario is Onondaga Lake ,the lake is five miles (8 km) long and a mile (1.5 km) wide, and is reported to have a maximum depth of 63 feet (19 metres). It is said to be the home of a creature called Oggie. The traditions of the Onondagas, and the Iroquois, indigenous peoples of the region, indicate that a creature has lived in Onondaga Lake for centuries.
